As this is only just the start of another crazy cold, frigid, arctic, polar-bear-lovin’ weather season, here are some easy tips to help protect your kids from Mother Nature’s wintery wonders. The anticipated forecast this season, which is described by the Farmers’ Almanac to be, “exceptionally cold, if not downright frigid weather” (just when we thought it couldn’t get worse), may take a toll on your children (and adults too!).
Protect skin!
You may have noticed the brisk cold air we have already is taking its toll on your children’s skin. Put that lotion into motion on them! The dry air will make their skin itchy, and honestly drive them nuts, no matter how much you layer them up before going outside. Even better, apply the lotion while their skin is still moist (Newsflash –bubble baths actually dry out their skin!). Sensitive skin? No problem! Try to use natural oils like coconut or even canola.
Most people (like myself) tend to forget that sunscreen isn’t just a summer-thing. Even when it’s cold outside, the sun still shines just as bright. Granted the risk of sunburn is much lower, but keep in mind, the sun’s ultraviolet rays reflect off of the snow and water, which increases exposure. Similarly, sunglasses are just as important to protect their eyes, as the sun is just as bright as it would be if at the beach on a summer’s day.
Help avoid bad hair days
Is your child’s hair getting more dried out, and standing up like they’re full of static electricity each time you brush it (especially when they take their hats off)? Try a conditioner (or more of it if you already do), and while rinsing it out, leave a little bit in, to add some extra conditioning throughout the day. Hint: This works for adults too!
Keep those lips kissable
Any kind of lip balm or chapstick will definitely help prevent their lips from cracking. Most kids like doing it themselves, and the flavors that companies have come out with now make it a win-win for all. What kid wouldn’t want a little taste of blue cotton candy or sweet orange berry?
Hydration is a wonderful thing
Keeping the kids hydrated with plenty to drink, and also eating fruits and vegetables, helps keep their skin hydrated. You may need fewer products to protect them simply by just maintaining their diet. (This is the most natural, and cheapest way too!).
Consider a humidifier
Although humidifers do help with stuffed noses and those coughs that refuse to go away, remember to properly care for the humidifier too! Mold likes deep, warm, moist areas, so be sure to keep a hygrometer in your child’s room. Additionally, keep it clean by rinsing the tank out after each use and wiping it dry with a towel before refilling. Be sure to do a thorough cleaning of it every few days, and check on the filters (if any at all), which will all be in the manufacturers’ manual. This may seem like a lot of extra work, but I can tell you from a personal point of view, ever since my son has had one in his bedroom at night, he has slept better and his room is warm and cozy.
Good luck out there my friends, and stay warm! Personally, I’d like to add a cup of hot chocolate to all of these ideas too.
