This presentation will introduce strategies for helping autistic youth and others with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) to manage anxiety using a multicomponent intervention plan that integrates Positive Behavior Support (PBS) with Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT).
Interventions will incorporate strategies from CBT (i.e., gradual exposure to anxious situations, cognitive restructuring, psychoeducation) as well as strategies from PBS including Prevention Strategies (e.g., providing choices, increasing predictability), Replacement Strategies (e.g., asking for a break), and Response/Consequences strategies (e.g., positively reinforcing or supporting attempts to approach a feared situation).
IMPORTANT: A confirmation email will be sent to you with a link to Moskowitz et. al. (2023) Treating Fear and Anxiety in Autistic Youth. Please review the article prior to attending the webinar. Thank you!
The Home and Community Network of the Association of Positive Behavior Support (HCPBS) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to expanding and enhancing the application of PBS principles across home and community settings, contexts, and the lifespan for people with behavioral challenges (including intellectual and developmental disabilities, mental health diagnoses and seniors who require memory care and other related services) and the systems that support them.
