Chill time
There is nothing better for a parent than to sit in an ice-cold movie theater for 90 minutes on a 95 degree day. Compared to going to the park or going to the pool? It’s a no brainer. Chances are your child will enjoy the movie and it will give you some time to “chill.” Oh wait, yeah it does get better. Summer kid movies for a discount price? Fantastic!
Regal Cinemas runs summer movies for $1 on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 10am at the Colonial Park Regal Cinema. Carmike Cinemas offer a kids movie every Thursday at Mechanicsburg and Camp Hill Digiplex for $4 which includes a kid size drink and popcorn. Click the highlighted text links to find more information and the featured movie each week.
Yes, there is a Drive-movie theater in our area! Haar’s drive-in in Dillsburg has a double feature every weekend beginning at dusk (9pm) They have an awesome concession stand (do not bring snacks from home-so we can help them stay in business). This makes a late night, but it’s so much fun!
Don’t feel like cooking?

Going out for ice cream?
Keep these deals in mind. Bruster’s has a BYOB (Bring your own banana) on Thursdays for a half price banana split. I don’t know about you, but I’d call that dinner. Kids under 40 inches and doggies get a free ice cream treat. I’ve also heard rumored that if its raining, go to Bruster’s for a special discount on your ice cream purchase.
Dairy Queen has a $5 meal deal that includes an ice cream treat!
A family favorite of ours is Kristy’s Whistle Stop for a nostalgic ice cream treat. We like the raspberry and peanut butter twist cone which tastes like PB&J.They also have great barbeque and fries.
Dickey’s Barbecue Pit offers free kids’ meal with a paid adult meal on Sundays. They also have “Make your own” free vanilla frozen yogurt cones after your meal in the store.
Get into a good “free” book
The Cumberland county, Dauphin county and the Perry county library systems are running a bunch of free events and reading contests this summer. Stop by and check it out at your local library. It is a weekly event to go to the library and pick new books. It’s fun to meet friends and enjoy books at the same time.
Many local churches host free vacation bible school opportunities for kids. This is amazing that there are volunteers who enjoy spending every night with your child, singing, dancing, doing crafts and having fun with your child. I couldn’t find an updated listing of churches that host but here is a listing from 2014 with contact numbers so you can find current schedules.
Check with your local township events calendar for free events in your area. You’ll be surprised what you might find.
Check this out! Happy summer Central PA!
