Are you interested in providing a safe and fun “trick or treat” night for every child? Join the initiative from F.A.R.E. (Food Allergy Research & Education) for a non-candy treat as an option for children. Providing a few Halloween stickers, pencils and toys is a small investment to make for a safe Halloween for every child in your neighborhood.

Because food allergies are so common, one out of every thirteen children in America has one, many houses give out safe treats as well as candy. Some of these alternatives include stickers, crayons, glow sticks.

Where can I find a teal pumpkin?

The first step is to decide if you want to buy the paint to paint your own pumpkin teal, or buy a pre-painted pumpkin to display.  I like the idea of using a “fake pumpkin” since I can store it and reuse it each year.  If you decide to go the DIY route, you’ll need to buy teal paint (available at most craft stores) and paint your pumpkin.

teal-pumpkin2My mom gave this pre-painted teal pumpkin to us as a gift along with information about the project, since we have a child with a severe peanut allergy.

She went to Michael’s and purchased the pre-painted teal pumpkin and used the 50% off coupon.  She spent about $7. She made the ribbon separately.

I really love the way our teal pumpkin looks as a decoration for the whole season. What a great way to celebrate the season and show our awareness of food allergies. We are excited to begin a new tradition of non-food treats this year in addition to candy for our trick-or-treaters!

non-food-treats

These photos show our family’s non-candy treats ready to go. We have stickers and a choice of 2 crafts to take home; a ghost and a cat. The ghosts are foam cut-out kits. The cats are plastic pieces on a formed grid that you iron. These adorable items were also provided by grandma, we are incredibly lucky to have her.
