Ah, the decision all mothers look forward to each October, What will my child choose to be for Halloween?  Even adults love the idea of “being” someone else for a day. To a child, this could be the most fantastic day of the year!

Frozen

If you search online for the most popular costumes this year, you will find: Elsa and Anna, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Captain America, Spiderman etc.  It can be difficult to find appropriate costumes for children in stores, without seeing disturbing promiscuity or horror-filled gore.

Wonder WomanDo you remember what your costumes were as a child?  A hobo, a doctor, a cowboy, a ghost, a witch, a clown a pumpkin… just to name a few.   I do remember being envious of a friend who had a “real wonder woman” costume.  It was more common for my friends and I to make our costumes.

ImaginationLet’s revisit the classics this year.  What if we challenged our children to come up with their best costume without buying anything?  What if we helped them create something using their imagination?  Maybe we could make something from recycled projects?

Challenging your child to use their imagination could potentially give you a lot more to talk about around the dinner table.  It will most definitely give you more time together which will always be beneficial.  If your costume turns out well, you have the potential for “hero” parent status and incredible photos.

I searched for DIY and homemade Halloween costumes for kids. Here are some of my favorites:

Good luck, and most of all…have fun!
