Some kids do not enjoy cook-outs since many don’t care for traditional favorites such as macaroni salad, deviled eggs, baked beans etc. As an adult I’ve grown to love these dishes, but as a child I was not a fan. I’m not surprised that my children have followed in my footsteps.
Probably the best way to get children to eat what you’re preparing, is to allow them to help. If you are very organized with all ingredients ready, allow your child to help assemble. My trick is to give my child a separated work area on a cookie sheet and that way if there is some finger-licking it won’t contaminate all of the guests’ food, which I prepare.
Cook outs usually involve hot dogs, corn on the cob and watermelon. Those are typical kid-fare favorites. For a fun patriotic twist you may want to cut star shaped watermelon and add some blueberries.
Here is an inventive and very kid pleasing recipe, Pizza Skewers! Most kids like pizza and adding the “food on a stick” concept is sure to please. Also pulling apart each item off the skewer and dipping into the sauce could be fun. Using fingers and having the items cooked separately is a winning idea. This is also very easy to prepare.

This idea is a great one to involve your children into preparing. The strawberries need to be washed and dried then dipped into melted white chocolate. Immediately roll into blue sugar on wax paper and allow to cool. So festive and easy. Fruit is always a better option than cake, even if dipped in chocolate.

Happy Memorial day Central PA-
And I’m proud to be an American,
where at least I know I’m free.
And I won’t forget the men who died,
who gave that right to me.
