Children grow up quickly. It seems that each moment is flying by and we are not able to make the most of it. Phone calls, dirty dishes, laundry piles, barking dogs, text messages, social media posts, emails (just to mention a few) tasks that steal our attention away from our children. It seems that most children find electronic devices to occupy their time when we are not engaging them.

There is good news. We have more time to make a difference than we think by just simply engaging into our child’s play time and learning how to effectively communicate with them.

Communicating with your childAccording to this helpful video from the CDC, there are 4 steps to healthy communication with your child. 1) Praise 2) Imitation 3)Description 4) Active listening. This a good reminder to devote just a few minutes each day to really focus your attention on communication with your child during play.

Communicating with your child-play timeThis is an entertaining video showing how parents can miss valuable opportunities for communication by “over-directing” their child’s play time. Make the most out of your limited time with your child and allow them to lead the play. The best way to encourage play is to participate.
